Join the campaign to raise a statue of Mary Astell in her home town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne…

We might think of Astell as ‘the other Mary’. She explored many of the same ideas as the radical proto-feminist thinker, Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), but lived a century earlier. Wollstonecraft now has a monument, and we think Astell should have one too!

We are excited to announce that Newcastle City Council have approved our application for a commemorative plaque for Mary Astell. This should be unveiled in 2023. Details will be posted on this site as they become available.

We hope to use the unveiling of the plaque to launch the statue campaign, and start the process of commissioning a much-needed monument to women’s achievement in the heart of the city.

We hope the statue will be a key focal point for celebrations of the 300th anniversary of Astell’s death in 2031.

Please come back again soon to find out more!
